Quality
We use molecular distillation and carbon treatment to remove environmental contaminants from our products. All of our products meet the GOED voluntary monograph (GOED Omega-3) for PCBs, dioxins, furans, dioxin-like PCBs, the California Proposition 65, and the World Health Organization’s recommendations for fish oils. These are the most stringent standards in the world, far lower than the levels typically found in drinking water.
Yes. Every single lot of our fish oil ingredients and finished softgel products are tested for heavy metal content (lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic) by trusted independent third-party laboratories. All of our products meet or exceed the stringent limits in the GOED voluntary monograph and the limits set forth by California Proposition 65, both of which are more stringent than the FDA’s own published limits on heavy metals in foods and supplements.
Yes. All Wiley's Finest products are free from BPA. To eliminate the risk exposure to BPA, we package all of our products in glass bottles (not plastic) to ensure the finest quality.
We test every lot of our fish oil products at our in-house laboratory for safety, purity, and quality. Additionally, every lot is independently 3rd-party tested for heavy metals, environmental contaminants, and microbial contamination.
All of our products are manufactured to stringent dietary supplement standards as regulated by the FDA. There is no FDA-regulated definition of Pharmaceutical Grade, which means that anyone can claim a product is ‘Pharmaceutical Grade’ regardless of how the ingredient was made or where it came from. Some fish oil brands claim their product is ‘Pharmaceutical Grade’, but it is a meaningless term. Most fish oil ingredients are made in overseas manufacturing facilities that aren’t regulated or inspected by the FDA; Wiley’s Finest makes all of its ingredients at its FDA-inspected, family owned and operated manufacturing facility in Coshocton, Ohio, USA.
Our fish oil supply chain is rigorously monitored for quality and freshness through every step of the process. We have a third party test each lot of our fish oil to make sure it meets US and international standards for quality. Every product gets approved through our Quality Assurance department to make sure we produce the best products for our customers.
All of our products are tested for Heavy Metals (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic) and PCBs, dioxins, Furans, and Dioxin-like PCBs to comply with California Proposition 65 limits. We test every batch. Our products are independently certified by NSF (a 3rd party organization) to ensure that they both meet label claim and that contaminants meet safe limits. We proactively monitor our CalProp 65 compliance to ensure that all of our products exceed the relevant standards for microcontaminants in our fish oil.
Our softgel products, like our Peak EPA or Easy Swallow Minis, are 75-85% Omega-3 content, and 90% or more total PUFA. The saturated fatty acids have been completed removed, as well as most monounsaturated fatty acids. The freezing point of the Omega-3 fatty acids in their ethyl ester form are so low (-20° to 40°C) that they do not form a solid fat at freezer temperature. A fish oil softgel that remains clear at fridge temp just means that it has had all of the naturally occurring saturated fatty acids removed. That usually means its higher potency (higher Omega-3 content, lower saturated fat content). It doesn’t tell the customer how pure the product is – I.e. How low the PCBs, heavy metal content, etc. (essentially if they environmental contaminants have been removed). That requires much more sophisticated analytical equipment than a simple home freezer. Several of our products, like our Orange Burst liquids, have been purified to remove environmental contaminants, but have not been concentrated and still contain the saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids naturally present in raw (crude) fish oil. They will readily become cloudy in a fridge and will become very viscous or even semi-solid in a freezer, just like a high quality olive oil would. That doesn’t tell us anything about how pure or impure the product is, but simply what the individual fatty acid profile of the lipid mixture is.
Dietary Supplements are regulated by the FDA as a subset of foods under a 1994 law called DSHEA. Just like foods, the FDA inspects manufacturing facilities and regulates our industry. However, since our products are dietary supplements (not drugs), they do not require FDA approval to market and sell, just like a barbecue sauce, cracker, pickles, potato chip, salad dressing or many other hundreds of thousands of food products made in the US by small businesses.

Our manufacturing facility is regularly inspected by the FDA about once a year. Our FDA facility number is #12725424694.
Most of our products are not Halal or Kosher certified. We have one Kosher Fish Oil that is manufactured under the stringent guidelines of the Orthodox Union rabbinical organization. However, our Peak EPA and Prenatal DHA softgel capsules are made with fish gelatin and our liquid products are free of gelatin. Our products do not contain pork gelatin or pork products.
We do have links to 3rd party testing on our products, which will show the PCB and Heavy Metal levels, etc.

Our fish oils are shipped from Alaska to our FDA registered manufacturing facility in Ohio in airtight oxygen barrier containers. We combine the fish oil with food grade ethanol to make fatty acid ethyl esters. This allows Omega-3 fatty acids to be separated from saturated fatty acids that we don’t want.
Molecular Distillation is a sophisticated processing technique used to remove low molecular weight compounds from high molecular weight compounds. Extremely high vacuum and very short exposure to heat allows us to carefully remove persistent organic pollutants (like PCBs and heavy metals) but avoid damaging any of the delicate Omega-3 EPA & DHA fatty acids.
The trimmings from the filleting process (the heads and livers mostly) are cooked using steam and ground up. As the parts are cooked they release oil (much in the same way a piece of bacon when cooked yields bacon fat). The oil is separated from the protein and filtered. This oil is then stored in dedicated storage tanks until it is packed off into oxygen barrier containers or railcars filled with nitrogen, and shipped to our plant.
Once the oil is in our plant the magic happens where we do the purification, concentration, and distillation to make the finished ingredient.
There are several ways we carefully process fish oils to remove environmental contaminants. First, we use wild-caught Alaskan fish oil (which already has extremely low levels of pollution due to the isolation of the Bering Sea watershed). Second, we carefully molecularly distill the oils to remove PCBs, pesticides, and mercury. Third, all of our oil is slow filtered through activated charcoal to move other pollutants like furans, dioxins, and arsenic. Our products are virtually unmatched by any other fish oil ingredient in the world for purity.
All of the fish oil ingredients for our products are made at our family owned & operated plant in Coshocton, Ohio.
Yes. We donate Omega-3 fish oils to researchers who request Omega-3 products for studying the health benefits. There is one study completed on our Peak EPA formula and several studies in progress for both Peak EPA and our Easy Swallow Minis. Read our Latest News for the most current research
Ingredients & Sourcing
Our products are made from certified sustainable, concentrated wild Alaskan fish oil and then concentrated in a sophisticated process by American workers at our family-owned and operated plant in eastern Ohio.
Unlike many other sources of fish oil, the Alaska Pollock that are our source are caught for human food. The fresh fish are harvested on board factory vessels or at shore plants within hours of the catch, separating out the omega-3-rich brains, eyes, and livers of the fish, which are then quick-frozen and their oil extracted. Then the oil is shipped to us, and we use sophisticated concentration technology to increase and standardize the omega-3 content to meet the label claim of our different formulas.
Alaska Pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), also known as Walleye Pollock, is a short-lived species of wild, coldwater fish. Pollock is a member of the cod family Gadidae.
Our oil comes from fresh wild Alaska Pollock caught by American fishermen, unlike most fish oil supplements sold in the U.S., which are produced from Peruvian anchovy oil (anchovies caught in South America). Our Alaska Pollock oil is sourced entirely from the Eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska populations, which are solely found within U.S. waters. The Bering Sea is one of the world’s most pristine and productive ecosystems for marine life.
Hexane is a common solvent used in the extraction of botanicals or oilseeds. Some people have concern over trace amounts of hexane in foods having a negative effect on health. Our process does not use hexane as a solvent (process aid). Our product is ‘free of Hexane’.
We’d have to ask our supplier to know for sure. However, we know the final flavor they supply us is ethanol free as it’s a solution in safflower oil, not ethanol. We do use ethanol as a processing aid in our concentration process but we remove all of it prior to any flavor blending and bottling. The product should be ethanol free – less than 10 ppm (parts per million) ethanol.
While all fish provide omega-3s, specifically EPA and DHA, the amount in different kinds of fish vary so more or less fish is needed to create the potency that is most beneficial. We’ve chosen Alaska Pollock because it is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council as sustainable and low bycatch (few other kinds of fish are caught in the trawling net). According to NOAA FishWatch, no overfishing is occurring on Pollock stocks. Alaska Pollock is considered to be the most well-managed, large-scale fishery in the world and one that will be around for many more generations.
Natural Mixed Tocopherols are an antioxidant which are used as a natural preservative to protect the fish oil from becoming rancid. Exposure to light and heat are the most damaging to fish oils – it will slowly cause them to oxidize and smell and taste fishy.
In short, nearly all the dietary supplements on the market are in the EE form, and nearly all of the clinical research with omega-3 fish oil has been done with products in the EE form. We absorb and utilize both the EE and TG forms equally well. The priority with fish oil is – like all fat-soluble nutrients –to take the supplements with food. Tests with EE fish oil capsules compared to fish show that we absorb the omega-3 from both forms equally well, too. Last, it takes 2-3 months for tissue levels to change, so regardless of form it’s important to take omega-3 over time.
Our Orange Burst product is in the natural TG form. All other liquids (peak, elementary, beginner, kosher) are in the re-esterified TG form. All other softgels (peak epa, minis, prenatal, cholesterol, vitamin k2) are in the EE form.
All of the Astaxanthin in our Orange Burst product is naturally present in the fish oil – we haven’t added any Astaxanthin from algae or other sources. I know it seems somewhat odd that Alaska Pollock, which is a whitefish, would have such a brilliantly colored orange fish oil. However, it’s just their biology works: Pollock make micronutrient carotenoid antioxidants such as Astaxanthin in their liver, and our fish oil is chiefly made from Pollock livers.
The plant sterols in our Cholesterol Support formula are derived from North American pine tree sap.
Lemons mostly from South America, a natural flavor which is made up of different citrus aldehydes extracted from citrus peels, nearly all lemons but might be some oranges, etc.
Our softgels are encapsulated with gelatin, water, and glycerin. Glycerin acts as a humectant to retain moisture and keep the softgel from becoming brittle. The glycerin is derived from non-GMO palm oil.
Our gelatin in our Prenatal DHA, Peak EPA, and Vitamin K2 is from tilapia (fish) from South Korea. The Easy Swallow Minis and the Cholesterol Support is from beef gelatin from the US.
No gluten is used in processing our fish oil, and our bottling facility for our liquids does not handle wheat products of any kind. In addition, we do spot testing for traces of gluten (less than 20ppm gluten is the federal standard). However, we don’t test every batch. If you’re highly sensitive to gluten, proceed with caution in consuming our products.
Personal Queries
No, but we recommend you store Wiley's Finest products in a dark, cool, dry place (max. temp. 77° F). Our products have a shelf life for 3 years when stored at room temperature. Many people refrigerate their fish oil softgels or liquid oils and it is perfectly OK to do so. A great tip is to put your fish oil and other vitamins in the fridge; when you open up the fridge for a snack you’ll remember to take your vitamins and stay healthy.
All Wiley's Finest products have a shelf life of 3 years when unopened in the original container and stored in a cool, dry place.
Our softgel pills do not need to be refrigerated, although you are welcome to do so. Our liquids do need to be refrigerated after opening. This helps to preserve their freshness.
Not typically. Our products are carefully deodorized by American workers. The extra care and attention shows in our extremely fresh tasting oils. Our fish oils are as good or better than any product on the market. However, all EPA & DHA Omega-3 products made from fish oil, krill, and algae taste and smell like fish, so some extremely sensitive palates may detect a mild fresh fish taste and odor, even in our products. When EPA & DHA Omega-3s oxidize, they break down into compounds that smell fishy. A good rule of thumb for a fish oil product is to apply the same standard you would for fresh fish from the grocery store or sushi restaurant: if it smells or tastes extremely fishy and unpleasant, don’t consume it. All of our products are satisfaction guaranteed.
The most common side effect is improved health and well-being!
Our website is not intended to provide medical advice or substitute for a physician’s care. Common drug interactions with Omega-3s are blood thinners, blood pressure medication, and cholesterol lowering medication. Many doctors will recommend to their patients that they avoid taking fish oils while on such medication because it can lower blood pressure. However, many individuals who seek a natural approach to health will take fish oils supplements and avoid pharmaceutical drugs. There are several good resources on the web for drug interactions: WebMD, Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, and University of Maryland Medical Center.
The benefits of Omega-3 supplements are different from one person to another based on the current health condition of the person and his or her daily dose of EPA and DHA. In most cases, energy and mood improves very quickly as your body’s Omega-3 and Omega-6 balance improves. The long-term benefits of heart health, joint health, and brain function improve as you continue to take the natural supplements.
Yes. Taking fish oil helps maintain muscle strength as we age. A clinical trial in men and women (aged 60-85 years young) found that taking 3 or more grams of EPA and DHA omega-3 per day helped maintain muscle mass and prevented the typical decline in muscle mass seen in older age. As people age, loss of muscle mass is associated with higher risk of falling, disability, longer hospital stays, and inability to carry out daily activities such as grocery shopping and bathing. [Smith, AJCN, 2015]
The challenge in the western diet is getting enough EPA & DHA Omega-3 from fish, not too much! However, like all oils such as soybean oil, olive oil, or peanut oils, too much fish oil can cause diarrhea. The FDA recommends a maximum consumption of 3g per day of EPA+DHA and no more than 2g per day through supplements.
Maybe. Our products are distilled and don’t contain any fish protein. Highly refined oils such as ours aren’t subject to allergen labeling laws in the U.S. which is spelled out in Senate Bill 1293. However, since they are derived from fish, we make sure to put that on our label in case any of our customers are highly sensitive to fish. If you are allergic to fish, we recommend you evaluate our product with caution and ask your doctor if you are uncertain for any reason prior to using the product.
Omega-3 rich fish oils are commonly used to fortify premium pet foods. Fish oils are also poured directly onto cats’ or dogs’ foods. While we currently don’t make a pet specific product, many pet owners choose to give their pet a high quality, human grade product. In fact, many owners of competition horses feed their pets EPA Omega-3 rich oils for their beneficial anti-inflammatory effects! The choice of feeding a softgel capsule to a dog or cat or pouring oil directly over the pet’s food is largely a personal or practical one.
Seafood & Sustainabilty
Alaska Pollock and Pacific Whiting come from well-managed fisheries with a high level of scrutiny and good management by the National Marine Fisheries Service, a division of NOAA. Both fish are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the gold standard for independent third-party verification of good fisheries management. Our MSC certification number is #MRAG-C-064. All of our products that are certified bear that number and can be traced on the MSC’s product finder here: MSC Product Finder.
Alaska Pollock fisheries are considered to be the gold standard for well-managed, wild-capture fisheries.
The MSC is an independent non-profit organization that sets a standard for sustainable fishing. Fisheries that wish to demonstrate they are well-managed according to the science-based MSC standard are assessed by expert auditors who are independent of both the fishery and the MSC. Seafood products may display the blue MSC eco-label only if that seafood can be traced back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified against the MSC standard.

Product Specific Questions
What happened to the bottle is a softgel ruptured and leaked onto the other softgels making them look speckled. Once exposed to air, the fish oil had began to oxidize. Due to the red tint of the oxidized fish oil, it gives the appearance of blood but it is definitely NOT. I bet that the remaining softgels in the bottom of the bottle are probably one big melted glob.
Yes. Adults and children enjoy the benefits of our FOR KIDS! Omega-3 Fish Oil liquids, Beginner's DHA and Elementary EPA.
We recommend that you follow the suggested use on the label to get the optimum benefits from these highly concentrated oils. However consult your practitioner who will be able to advise you if you might benefit from taking more than the recommended dosage. As all fish oils have blood-thinning properties, it is important to check with your doctor first.
You can give Wiley's Finest adult products to older children. We suggest parents use caution when giving a child a softgel capsule. Capsules can be a choking hazard and parents need to carefully consider if their older child or tween is ready to swallow capsules. Our Easy Swallow Minis are a great starter softgel as they are half the size of a regular Fish Oil capsule. All Wiley's Finest liquids can be given to children, but we specially made our FOR KIDS! products for children: Beginner's DHA (ages 1+) and Elementary EPA (ages 4+), deliver additional nutrients that support the development of young bodies.
All Wiley’s Finest fish oil products contain a small amount of non-GMO mixed identity-preserved (IP) tocopherols. Wiley’s Finest FOR KIDS products (Elementary EPA and Beginner’s DHA) also contain non-GMO identity-preserved Vitamin E.
Like all animal or marine derived fats, Fish Oil naturally contains small amounts of cholesterol. Cholesterol is an important hormonal building block – many foods have large amounts of cholesterol (Eggs for instance have an average of 150-200mg of Cholesterol per egg).
Batch testing results for our Peak Omega-3 liquid are typically much lower than 10mg per serving – usually 3-4mg per serving. We set the upper limit at 10mg Cholesterol per serving to be very conservative. We remove 90% or more of the cholesterol naturally contained in the fish oil during our molecular distillation process. This means that most of our products contain less than 2mg of cholesterol (typically less than 1) and are eligible to bear the FDA label claim for ‘Cholesterol Free’. Our liquids have a larger serving size, and so we make a conservative claim for the amount of cholesterol that could be in the product.
Good and Bad cholesterol is usually a slang term to refer to High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL or ‘Good’) and Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL or ‘BAD’) in your body. This refers to how your body metabolizes cholesterol and how it is stored in your bloodstream. How much LDL and HDL cholesterol has a lot to do with your diet and personal physiology. Cholesterol is not ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’ until you metabolize it and it enters your bloodstream.
If you have any concerns about the cholesterol content of our fish oil or your own blood cholesterol levels, we recommend you seek the advice of a healthcare professional.
All of the vitamin A in our Orange Burst formula is naturally found in Alaska Pollock. It is not added in from another source. Orange Burst is our most minimally processed product – it is simply purified through molecular distillation but the Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA) are not concentrated.
Our other products are made from concentrated Omega-3 Fatty acids from Alaska Pollock (fish) oil. During the concentration process, the Omega-3 content of other formulas are concentrated (raised above the levels found in Orange Burst), but the Vitamin A unfortunately is unavoidably removed. We’ve done spot testing on our other concentrated products (such as Peak EPA) and found them to contain very low levels of Vitamin A, typically less than 1 IU per serving, and not enough to make a label claim.
No. Capsules are designed to resist stomach enzymes and acids, ensuring that the oil inside reaches the lower part of the intestine. This is done primarily to mask fishy taste from low quality oil. The enteric coatings are made from combinations of magnesium stearate and sodium alginate; these coatings taste unpleasant. Wiley’s Finest Fish Oils are made from fresh, wild caught fish and are processed extremely carefully to produce very clean, mild tasting oils. We don’t use enteric coatings because we don’t need to: it keeps the product simple and free of extra additives.
Our Orange Burst product contains 660mg of EPA and DHA per teaspoon.
Yes, your 5-year-old child can take Orange Burst.
If it were my child, I would give them half of the recommended amount (1/4 teaspoon) until the baby was 1 year old.
Our Peak Omega-3 Liquid is a highly-concentrated source of EPA and DHA from Alaskan fish oil. To concentrate EPA and DHA, we separate EPA and DHA from the other fatty acids that naturally occur in fish oil, then specifically combine EPA and DHA together. When we concentrate EPA and DHA this way, we can leave them as separate (or individual) fatty acids mixed together or we can attach EPA and DHA to glycerin to make a triglyceride (TG). In our process, we get at least 90% TG and the other 10% are diglycerides.
Triglyceride: 3 fatty acids (e.g., EPA, DHA) + glycerin.
Diglyceride: 2 fatty acids + glycerin
The other fatty acids that we remove are used in biodiesel. We actually fuel a line of trucks in Georgia with our fish oil that isn’t EPA and DHA. As you likely know, it’s EPA and DHA that have the most biological benefit for human health. They are dietary essential fats found in fish oil.
Peruvian anchovy oil is made from fishmeal (ground-up anchovies). Because the oil is also used for paints, lubricants, and leather tanning or fed to farmed salmon as well as used in supplements, we don’t believe it’s the right choice for our nutritional products.
Yes. Softgel capsules are easily transported in the bottle or in a dark, plastic pill container. It is best to protect them from long exposure to heat, for example, in a car on a hot day. However, we don’t recommend traveling with liquid fish oil unless you can carry it in a cooler or get our Travel size.
We make travel sizes of three of our products: Peak EPA Travel contains 10 capsules, and Peak Omega-3 Liquid Travel and Orange Burst Travel are both 2 ounce bottles, containing 12 servings, and are TSA friendly so you can take it onboard your next flight.
The Wiley’s Finest Orange Burst fish oil is a good source of omega-7. Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) is a monounsaturated fat, naturally found in fish. Since we (Wiley’s Finest) refine and concentrate our own US-sourced fish oil, we are able to keep and concentrate the naturally occurring omega-7 in our fish oil. Omega-7 is a healthful, monounsaturated fat (it’s like a cousin to the fat in olive oil) but there is not much clinical research yet. More and more is being published and it’s exciting to see. There is some preliminary work on omega-7 and hormone balance but I defer to the Pharmaca practitioner because he/she is in direct contact with patients. We have heard these same benefits as well as other benefits for women. It’s very popular for this use. We would like to hear from you after you’ve taken it for a while.
Yes, you can. The serving size on our products is a suggested daily serving. The best amount of EPA and DHA omega-3 for you to consume depends on your general health, your daily diet, and why you are taking fish oil. For example, some people want just enough EPA and DHA to meet minimum recommendations while other people take much more EPA and DHA because of their family history or because their healthcare practitioner recommended it.
Beef only, no pork.
Our products are labeled ‘DOES NOT CONTAIN’ soy (in addition to gluten, dairy, and a number of other things). Soy is one of the 7 major protein allergens (wheat, dairy, soy, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts). When we say our product DOES NOT CONTAIN SOY that’s all it is meant to communicate – no soy protein in our products. It is hypoallergenic with regards to soy protein. This is consistent with Federal labeling requirements for foods and supplements. It’s a highly refined oil and is exempt from allergen labeling. This is also consistent with FDA GMPs and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) standards for allergen risks in manufacturing.
Our Fish softgels do contain fish protein from tilapia (the fish gelatin). Those products are Peak EPA, Prenatal DHA, and Vitamin K2.
Both Peak EPA and Omega-3 Liquid are concentrated fish oils but the serving size of Omega-3 Liquid is one teaspoon, supplying nearly 4 times as much oil per serving. One teaspoon of Omega-3 Liquid contains 10 mg of cholesterol. One capsule of Peak Omega-3 Liquid contains less than 0.5 mg cholesterol and such a small amount rounds to zero on the label.
Nutrition
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients for health. We need omega-3 fatty acids for numerous normal body functions, such as contributing to healthy eyes and supporting cell membranes in the brain; they are associated with many other health benefits, including maintaining heart health.
Our bodies cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids so we must obtain them through food or supplements. There are two major types of omega-3 fatty acids: ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) – found in some vegetable oils, such flaxseed, chia seed, rapeseed (canola), soybean and in walnuts. ALA is also found in some green vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, and salad greens. The body is very poor at converting short-chain Omega-3 ALA to long-chain Omega-3 EPA and DHA. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) – found mostly in fatty fish.
EPA is eicosahexaenoic acid, a 20 carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish and algae. EPA has been found to promote a healthy circulatory system and consequently a healthy heart, support proper immune function, support joint flexibility, promote good mood and emotional well-being and is essential for reducing inflammation.
DHA is docosahexaenoic acid, a 22 carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish and algae. DHA has been found to be essential for memory and cognitive function and supportive of a healthy pregnancy. DHA is a very important structural Omega-3 that provides support for visual and brain development of fetuses and infants.
EPA & DHA Omega-3s from fish oils have been clinically demonstrated to lower blood cholesterol, blood triglycerides, and blood pressure. They are a drug-free way to promote normal cholesterol and blood pressure in healthy adults. Supplements containing EPA & DHA Omega-3 are not a drug, nor a substitute for drugs. We recommend you consult with your physician if you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides, or other risk factors for heart disease.
There are many great things about krill oils, but their typical dosage of EPA & DHA is very low in most consumer products. Standard regular strength krill oil has only 90mg of EPA & DHA per softgel, while our Peak EPA 720 product has over 960mg of EPA & DHA; over 10 times as much! Krill is an extremely expensive way to get 1000mg per day of EPA & DHA: to get 1000mg of EPA & DHA from a regular strength store brand would cost $6.00-7.00 every day, or $180-$210 per month! (11 pills per day of 45 count CVS regular strength krill at $27.99)
There is very little DPA in Pollock oil. We concentrate for EPA and DHA because the 30,000+ studies on omega-3 have been completed on EPA and DHA. DHA (22:5 n-3) naturally occurs in small amounts in fish and seal oil and like EPA and DHA, is found in human blood and tissues. Typically referred to as the “other omega-3,” DPA will convert to EPA (retroconversion) with limited/almost no conversion to DHA. DPA may act as a reservoir or buffer for EPA and DHA. In sum, very little is known about DPA beyond its role as a metabolite between EPA and DHA. Studies to date have not shown benefits that differ from EPA and DHA. The FDA qualified health claim is on EPA and DHA and that is our focus.
Yes. EPA and DHA are specific types of Omega-3 fatty acids and they exist in supplements in different forms, depending on the brand or product. Wiley's Finest softgel products are made with the concentrated ethyl ester form and our liquids are made with concentrated triglyceride and/or natural triglyceride form. Although some brands tout superior absorption or increased bioavailability of the triglyceride form over ethyl ester form, this is mostly marketing hype. Nearly all of the research proving the benefits of EPA and DHA Omega-3 has used the ethyl ester form. All of these forms are effective. The most important factors in getting benefit from these healthy fats is the amount of EPA and DHA you consume, and that you do so every day.
No. Flax, chia, and walnuts contain ALA Omega-3, not EPA and DHA Omega-3. Now, depending on the overall diet, people can make a small amount (5-10%) of EPA from ALA, but not DHA. If you don’t eat seafood every day, you are probably not getting enough EPA and DHA Omega-3 in your diet.
The human body functions well with a 1/1 ratio of Omega-3/Omega-6 balance. Increasing your Omega-3 intake by 50% is even better.
Vitamin K1 and K2 work differently from each other and we need them both. Research shows that Vitamin K2 works better at helping build strong bones and promoting healthy circulation.
It is hard to do. Vitamin K2 is naturally found in meat and dairy foods, in very small/minute amounts. The best source is fermented soybeans, called ‘natto’. Most Americans fall short of getting the optimal amount of vitamin K2 in their diet.
MenaQ7® is the most clinically researched form of Vitamin K2. It is well absorbed, has proven benefits, and lasts longer in the body compared to other forms.
Everyone needs vitamin K, as it is an essential vitamin. A regular intake of both vitamin K1 and K2 is important for everyone, including people on blood thinning medications. People on the classic blood thinning medications, such as Warfarin, are advised to talk with their doctor and consider if a daily supplement would be beneficial; research suggests a moderate and steady intake is most effective. The newer types of blood thinning medications work differently (they don’t target vitamin K function and people don’t need regular monitoring) and limited research suggests there is no reason to limit vitamin K intake, especially of Vitamin K2 MK-7.
This should not be construed as medical advice. Seek your physician's input before adding this nutrient to your diet if you are on blood thinning medications.
Most likely, yes. Most prenatal supplements don't include DHA or don't include enough DHA, so taking DHA is generally a good idea.
The minimum recommended is 300 mg DHA/day although 600 mg DHA/day is best. During the last trimester and first few months of breastfeeding, up to 900 mg DHA/day is suggested by experts.
Yes. It is advised! The need for omega-3 from fish is so important that pregnant women are advised to eat 2-3 servings of fish every week. The type of fish matters. Salmon, trout, and canned light tuna are recommended, while shark and swordfish are not. Go to www.FDA.gov/fishadvice for more information and a colorful, handy chart.
Yes. DHA omega-3 is concentrated in sperm and an important nutrient for reproduction.
