Our products are made from certified sustainable, concentrated Wild Alaskan Fish Oil, caught by American fishermen and concentrated by American workers at our family owned & operated plant in eastern Ohio.
Most fish oil supplements sold in the U.S. are produced from Peruvian Anchovy Oil, caught in South America. The entire catch is ground up and rendered into oil and fishmeal (what is called a reduction fishery). The fishmeal is fed to farmed salmon, and the oils are used for paints, lubricants, leather tanning, or dietary supplements. Not our fish oil! Our oils are recovered from the eyes, heads, and livers of wild fresh fish caught for human consumption.
All of our fish oils are sourced from USA wild caught fish, caught by US registered vessels in American waters. Typically, about 95% or more of our fish oil is from Alaska Pollock and about 5% or less of our fish oil is from Pacific Whiting. Alaska Pollock is considered to be the most well-managed, large-scale fishery in the world.
Alaska Pollock (TheragraChalcogramma), also known as Walleye Pollock, is a short-lived species of wild, coldwater fish. Pollock is a member of the cod family Gadidae. Our Alaska Pollock oil is sourced entirely from the Eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska populations solely found within U.S. waters.
Pacific Whiting, also known as North Pacific hake, is a member of the family Merluccius. Our Pacific Whiting comes from an MSC-certified, U.S. wild capture fishery along the Oregon and Washington coast. Pacific Whiting is a minor component of some our products.
Yes. See Sustainability section of this site.
Alaska Pollock and Pacific Whiting come from well-managed fisheries with a high level of scrutiny and good management by the National Marine Fisheries Service, a division of NOAA. Both fish are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the gold standard for independent third-party verification of good fisheries management. Our MSC certification number is #MRAG-C-064. All of our products that are certified bear that number and can be traced on the MSC’s product finder here: MSC Product Finder
Alaska Pollock fisheries are considered to be the gold standard for well-managed, wild-capture fisheries.
The MSC is an independent non-profit organization that sets a standard for sustainable fishing. Fisheries that wish to demonstrate they are well-managed according to the science-based MSC standard are assessed by expert auditors who are independent of both the fishery and the MSC. Seafood products may display the blue MSC eco-label only if that seafood can be traced back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified against the MSC standard.
Unlike many other sources of fish oil, Alaska Pollock are caught for human consumption. Fresh fish are filleted onboard factory vessels or at shore plants within hours of the catch. The filets are quickly frozen and the oil is extracted.
Our fish oils are shipped from Alaska to our FDA registered manufacturing facility in Ohio in airtight oxygen barrier containers. We combine the fish oil with food grade ethanol to make fatty acid ethyl esters. This allows Omega-3 fatty acids to be separated from saturated fatty acids that we don’t want.
All of the fish oil ingredients for our products are made at our family owned & operated plant in Coshocton, Ohio.
Molecular Distillation is a sophisticated processing technique used to remove low molecular weight compounds from high molecular weight compounds. Extremely high vacuum and very short exposure to heat allows us to carefully remove persistent organic pollutants (like PCBs and heavy metals) but avoid damaging any of the delicate Omega-3 EPA & DHA fatty acids.
There are several ways we carefully process fish oils to remove environmental contaminants. First, we use wild-caught Alaskan fish oil (which already has extremely low levels of pollution due to the isolation of the Bering Sea watershed). Second, we carefully molecularly distill the oils to remove PCBs, pesticides, and mercury. Third, all of our oil is slow filtered through activated charcoal to move other pollutants like furans, dioxins, and arsenic. Our products are virtually unmatched by any other fish oil ingredient in the world for purity.
Dietary Supplements are regulated by the FDA as a subset of foods under a 1993 law called DSHEA. Just like foods, the FDA inspects manufacturing facilities and regulates our industry. However, since our products are dietary supplements (not drugs), they do not require FDA approval to market and sell, just like a barbecue sauce, cracker, pickles, potato chip, salad dressing or many other hundreds of thousands of food products made in the US by small businesses.
Our manufacturing facility is regularly inspected by the FDA about once a year. Our FDA facility number is #12725424694.
We use molecular distillation and carbon treatment to remove environmental contaminants from our products. All of our products meet the GOED voluntary monograph (GOED Omega-3) for PCBs, dioxins, furans, dioxin-like PCBs, the California Proposition 65, and the World Health Organization’s recommendations for fish oils. These are the most stringent standards in the world, far lower than the levels typically found in drinking water.
Yes. Every single lot of our fish oil ingredients and finished softgel products are tested for heavy metal content (lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic) by trusted independent third-party laboratories. All of our products meet or exceed the stringent limits in the GOED voluntary monograph and the limits set forth by California Proposition 65, both of which are more stringent than the FDA’s own published limits on heavy metals in foods and supplements.
We test every lot of our fish oil products at our in-house laboratory for safety, purity, and quality. Additionally, every lot is independently 3rd-party tested for heavy metals, environmental contaminants, and microbial contamination.
All of our products are manufactured to stringent dietary supplement standards as regulated by the FDA. There is no FDA-regulated definition of Pharmaceutical Grade, which means that anyone can claim a product is ‘Pharmaceutical Grade’ regardless of how the ingredient was made or where it came from. Some fish oil brands claim their product is ‘Pharmaceutical Grade’, but it is a meaningless term. Most fish oil ingredients are made in overseas manufacturing facilities that aren’t regulated or inspected by the FDA; Wiley’s Finest makes all of its ingredients at its FDA-inspected, family owned and operated manufacturing facility in Coshocton, Ohio, USA.
All Wiley's Finest products have a shelf life of 3 years when unopened in the original container and stored in a cool, dry place.
No, but we recommend you store Wiley's Finest products in a dark, cool, dry place (max. temp. 77° F). Our products have a shelf life for 3 years when stored at room temperature. Many people refrigerate their fish oil softgels or liquid oils and it is perfectly OK to do so. A great tip is to put your fish oil and other vitamins in the fridge; when you open up the fridge for a snack you’ll remember to take your vitamins and stay healthy.
Omega-3 rich fish oils have been consumed for their health benefits for hundreds of years. In fact, Cod Liver Oil is considered to be the world’s oldest dietary supplement, used by Scandinavian populations. There are over 2,400 clinical studies and over 23,000 scientific papers on Omega-3s. Dietary supplements have an excellent track record for safety, especially when compared to pharmaceutical drugs. Serious adverse events for supplements are less than ½ of 1 percent of serious events for drugs.
Maybe. Our products are distilled and don’t contain any fish protein. Highly refined oils such as ours aren’t subject to allergen labeling laws in the U.S. which is spelled out in Senate Bill 1293. However, since they are derived from fish, we make sure to put that on our label in case any of our customers are highly sensitive to fish. If you are allergic to fish, we recommend you evaluate our product with caution and ask your doctor if you are uncertain for any reason prior to using the product.
Our website is not intended to provide medical advice or substitute for a physician’s care. Common drug interactions with Omega-3s are blood thinners, blood pressure medication, and cholesterol lowering medication. Many doctors will recommend to their patients that they avoid taking fish oils while on such medication because it can lower blood pressure. However, many individuals who seek a natural approach to health will take fish oils supplements and avoid pharmaceutical drugs. There are several good resources on the web for drug interactions: WebMD, Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, and University of Maryland Medical Center.
The most common side effect is improved health and well-being!
The challenge in the western diet is getting enough EPA & DHA Omega-3 from fish, not too much! However, like all oils such as soybean oil, olive oil, or peanut oils, too much fish oil can cause diarrhea. The FDA recommends a maximum consumption of 3g per day of EPA+DHA and no more than 2g per day through supplements.
Not typically. Our products are carefully deodorized by American workers. The extra care and attention shows in our extremely fresh tasting oils. Our fish oils are as good or better than any product on the market. However, all EPA & DHA Omega-3 products made from fish oil, krill, and algae taste and smell like fish, so some extremely sensitive palates may detect a mild fresh fish taste and odor, even in our products. When EPA & DHA Omega-3s oxidize, they break down into compounds that smell fishy. A good rule of thumb for a fish oil product is to apply the same standard you would for fresh fish from the grocery store or sushi restaurant: if it smells or tastes extremely fishy and unpleasant, don’t consume it. All of our products are satisfaction guaranteed.
Our fish oil supply chain is rigorously monitored for quality and freshness through every step of the process. We have a third party test each lot of our fish oil to make sure it meets US and international standards for quality. Every product gets approved through our Quality Assurance department to make sure we produce the best products for our customers.
Omega-3 fish oils are a lifelong nutrient; in fact most infant formulas made by major pharmaceutical companies are fortified with EPA & DHA from either fish or algae.
The primary concern with giving fish oil pills to young children is that pills can be a choking hazard. All of our bottles recommend that the bottles be kept out of reach of small children because they can choke on pills or take too much oil. Just like milk products or other products that contain fat, eating too much in one sitting can cause vomiting or diarrhea.
Our family gives our Orange Burst product to our young toddlers; they love the great taste! We recommend you use caution when giving pills to children under 5 years of age, and that you use caution when giving liquids to children under 18 months. The child should be on solid foods and oils should be consumed while seated or standing.
Omega-3 rich fish oils are commonly used to fortify premium pet foods. Fish oils are also poured directly onto cats’ or dogs’ foods. While we currently don’t make a pet specific product, many pet owners choose to give their pet a high quality, human grade product. In fact, many owners of competition horses feed their pets EPA Omega-3 rich oils for their beneficial anti-inflammatory effects! The choice of feeding a softgel capsule to a dog or cat or pouring oil directly over the pet’s food is largely a personal or practical one.
Yes. We donate Omega-3 fish oils to any researchers who request Omega-3 products for studying the health benefits. There is one study completed on our Peak EPA formula and several studies in progress for both Peak EPA and our Easy Swallow Minis. Read our Latest News for the most current research.
We recommend that you follow the suggested use on the label to get the optimum benefits from these highly concentrated oils. However consult your practitioner who will be able to advise you if you might benefit from taking more than the recommended dosage. As all fish oils have blood-thinning properties, it is important to check with your doctor first.
Wiley's Finest uses bovine gelatin for our Easy Swallow Minis and Cholesterol Support products. It’s the most common and affordable gelatin, which helps us to keep our prices low. It’s typically made in the U.S. and is regularly tested to be BSE free. Our premium formula Peak EPA uses fish gelatin which is much more expensive, but is offered so that strict pescatarians still have a pill form option in our products. For those who are concerned with consuming animal or fish gelatin, our liquid fish oil Orange Burst product is 100% free of gelatin.
No. Capsules are designed to resist stomach enzymes and acids, ensuring that the oil inside reaches the lower part of the intestine. This is done primarily to mask fishy taste from low quality oil. The enteric coatings are made from combinations of magnesium stearate and sodium alginate; these coatings taste unpleasant. Wiley’s Finest Fish Oils are made from fresh, wild caught fish and are processed extremely carefully to produce very clean, mild tasting oils. We don’t use enteric coatings because we don’t need to: it keeps the product simple and free of extra additives.
No, Wiley's Finest oils are sourced from fish.
Wiley's Finest products do not include dairy.
Wiley's Finest products do not include gluten-containing ingredients.
Wiley's Finest products do not include soy-containing ingredients.
No. All of our fish oils contain a small amount of an antioxidant called Natural Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), made at our family owned and operated manufacturing facility. We add this to all of our products to preserve taste and odor and prevent formation of oxygen free radicals. Our formulation philosophy is that less is more, so we avoid adding extra fillers, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives to any of our products.
Natural Mixed Tocopherols are a form of Vitamin E found in nuts, grains, plants and leafy greens. They are nature’s own antioxidant to protect fats from oxidative damage.
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients for health. We need omega-3 fatty acids for numerous normal body functions, such as contributing to healthy eyes and supporting cell membranes in the brain; they are associated with many other health benefits, including maintaining heart health. †
Our bodies cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids so we must obtain them through food or supplements. There are two major types of omega-3 fatty acids: ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) - found in some vegetable oils, such flaxseed, chia seed, rapeseed (canola), soybean and in walnuts. ALA is also found in some green vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, and salad greens. The body is very poor at converting short-chain Omega-3 ALA to long-chain Omega-3 EPA and DHA. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) - found mostly in fatty fish.
EPA is eicosahexaenoic acid, a 20 carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish and algae. EPA has been found to promote a healthy circulatory system and consequently a healthy heart, support proper immune function, support joint flexibility, promote good mood and emotional well-being and is essential for reducing inflammation.
DHA is docosahexaenoic acid, a 22 carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish and algae. DHA has been found to be essential for memory and cognitive function and supportive of a healthy pregnancy. DHA is a very important structural Omega-3 that provides support for visual and brain development of fetuses and infants.
Experts recommend a daily dose of 500-1000mg of EPA and DHA daily for a normal healthy body. Higher doses may be needed for older people with unhealthy diets. Ask your doctor what dose is right for you.
EPA & DHA Omega-3s from fish oils have been clinically demonstrated to lower blood cholesterol, blood triglycerides, and blood pressure. They are a drug-free way to promote normal cholesterol and blood pressure in healthy adults. Supplements containing EPA & DHA Omega-3 are not a drug, nor a substitute for drugs. We recommend you consult with your physician if you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides, or other risk factors for heart disease.
The benefits of Omega-3 supplements are different from one person to another based on the current health condition of the person and his or her daily dose of EPA and DHA. In most cases, energy and mood improves very quickly as your body’s Omega-3 and Omega-6 balance improves. The long-term benefits of heart health, joint health, and brain function improve as you continue to take the natural supplements.
The human body functions well with a 1/1 ratio of Omega-3/Omega-6 balance. Increasing your Omega-3 intake by 50% is even better.
You can check your Omega-3 balance by taking a blood test. Blood tests can be found at myomegabloodtest.com. You can request a kit, take the test at home, and return for analysis.
There are many great things about krill oils, but their typical dosage of EPA & DHA is very low in most consumer products. Standard regular strength krill oil has only 90mg of EPA & DHA per softgel, while our Peak EPA 720 product has over 960mg of EPA & DHA; over 10 times as much! Krill is an extremely expensive way to get 1000mg per day of EPA & DHA: to get 1000mg of EPA & DHA from a regular strength store brand would cost $6.00-7.00 every day, or $180-$210 per month! (11 pills per day of 45 count CVS regular strength krill at $27.99)
